Hamilton Beach Professional Indian Juicer Mixer Grinder Review
Hamilton Beach is relatively a new entrant to the Indian market. But they are one of the market leaders in the home appliance industry in the US, selling a huge variety of reliable and durable appliances.
In India, they have started off by introducing the Hamilton Beach Professional Indian Juicer Mixer Grinder, which they claim is engineered in India and USA. With 3 stainless steel jars, a sturdy housing and a powerful 1400 Watt motor, it promises durability, efficiency and speed unlike any other. It is in fact one of the most powerful mixer grinders available for domestic use and perhaps the most expensive one too.
In this review, we take a look at its aesthetics, performance, safety aspects, pros and cons and more.
The Hamilton Beach Professional Juicer Mixer Grinder comes with three leak proof stainless steel jars.
The dry grinder comes with 500 ml capacity, while the multi-purpose jars come with 1 and 1.5 litre capacity.
All jars have shatterproof, Tritan lid locking system. Unless you lock the lid and then lock the jar to the base, the mixer grinder doesn’t start functioning.
While most mixer grinders in the market comes with round shaped jar, Hamilton Beach has designed square shaped jars with flow breakers. Not only does it help the with uniform grinding, but also makes it easier to pour liquid batter/juice/shakes etc without spilling.
Overall, the jars are well-built and sturdy. They look quite durable too. The brand promises that it will not crack or dent even in the long run.
The housing is fairly heavy and sturdy. It has a pre-set menu which makes it quite a unique appliance. Function wise, it makes it easy to grind various food of your choice. The menu include Dry, Wet Hard, Wet Soft, Blend and Soup. For the first three functions, you can set the consistency to your choice from fine, medium to coarse. For the Blend and Soup function, you need to choose from whether the jar is full or partially filled.
Depending on the function you choose, the appliance grinds in short pulses or continuously for optimal result.
If you are grinding something dry and set it to fine consistency, it takes 1 minute 20 seconds to finish the cycle. Medium consistency takes 50 seconds and Coarse consistency takes 40 seconds. In fine dry grinding , initially, the short pulses crushes the ingredient thoroughly for 20 seconds. Then, it runs continuously at high speed for the next one minute to finely powder the spice or whatever ingredient you have put in.
In Wet Hard function, grinding to fine consistency takes 1 minute 15 seconds, medium takes 45 seconds and coarse takes 30 seconds. Idli batter, chutney etc is usually ground in this setting.
In Wet Soft, grinding to fine consistency takes 1 minute 30 seconds, medium takes 40 seconds and coarse takes 15 seconds. Curry paste is usually ground in wet soft setting.
Blending a partially full jar takes 30 seconds, while a full jar takes 1 minute 30 seconds.
Soup function for full jar takes 6 minutes and partially filled jar takes 4 minutes.
In addition to these pre-set functions, you can choose the manual option, whereby you can use the jog dial to set the speed from 1 to 10 to which corresponds to 3000 to 18000 rpm.
The menu function is quite a boon as you can set and leave it for the pre-set time and carry on with other chores. Whether it be novices in the kitchen or multi-taskers, everyone will love this unique feature.
Now that we have taken a look at the features and functions, let us take a look at how the mixer grinder actually functions in real life.
We tested it with a few dry and soft hard grinding.
First, we tried with about 150 gm whole Garam Masala. As mentioned in the manual, we ensured that it is all less than 2.5 cm in length for optimal results. Setting it to dry grinding and consistency to fine, the mixer grinder ran for 1 minute 20 seconds. The results were pretty satisfactory. On sieving the ground masala, we obtained just about a teaspoon of coarse left over. Had we run it a bit longer than the pre-set time, it would have resulted in completely fine powder without any residue at all.
Next we tried to grind 100 gm whole Turmeric, which again we broke down to pieces less than 2.5 cm albeit some pieces were a tad thick. After 1 minute 20 seconds, the resultant mixture was sieved and we got about a Tablespoon of coarse residue, which again is pretty good considering the minimal time it took. One thing we found remarkable was that the aroma of turmeric ground using the mixer grinder is a lot more fragrant that the batch we ground from the mill.
Next, we tried raw rice which we soaked for 3 hours and then drained. Usually, at our home, we don’t buy packed Puttu and Idiyapam powder. Rather we grind it from the mill. So, we just wanted to see if we can grind the rice for puttu and idiyapam powder from home using this mixer grinder. Using a larger jar, we set it to dry grinding in fine consistency. Honestly, we were a bit skeptical as it set the timer to 1 minute 20 seconds. So this means, it doesn’t have a weight sensor that decides the time according to the food load. But we were proved wrong as as the end of 1.2 minutes, we got finely ground rice powder. On roasting and sieving, there were a bit of coarse residues, which we had to grind again. But you can’t really complain, because totally, it took just about 2 minute 40 seconds to grind a batch of raw rice while a regular mixer grinder would take much longer duration and a number of cycles of grinding and sieving.
Grinding idili batter in wet soft option to fine consistency also resulted in fine batter with which we were able to make soft delicious idili.
Along with the mixer grinder, you get a recipe book by Chef Kunal Kapoor. We tried making Kebab as per the instruction and in just 20 seconds, perfectly ground Kebab mixture was ready.
We really wanted to try out the soup function, but we didn’t find any recipe for the same in the book. As an experiment, we tried making Tomato soup by adding 2 blanched tomato, butter, garlic, onion and bay leaf to the grinder and then opting for the soup function. It ran for 4 minutes and at the end, when we opened the lid, steaming hot soup was ready and it didn’t have the raw taste of onion and garlic. It would have been really great if the company had provided a few soup recipes as most customers are unaccustomed to using a mixer grinder for making soup.
Overall, the performance is quite satisfactory. That the pre-set functions make it completely hands-free is definitely a huge advantage for busy home makers who multi-task. Agreed that dry grinding did not give perfect results. But it is quicker and efficient than most other mixer grinders available in the market today.
Hamilton Beach seems to have given sufficient attention to safety aspects of this Juicer Mixer Grinder. All jars come with safety lock, which ensures spill proof, hands free operation.
The mixer grinder has an on/off switch on the sides. However, only after locking the jar to the base can you start operating the juicer mixer grinder. This ensures double safety protection. The anti-skid base is also fairly effective. However, slight vibration is observed if the food load is less while wet grinding.
The motor comes with triple overload protection, which means it has advanced cooling mechanism, shows early warning in case of overload and cuts off automatically if the warning is breached.
Additionally, in the control panel, you have a motor temperature indicator. So, in case you are using it for a prolonged duration, you can exercise due caution to ensure that the motor doesn’t get heated up. It also serves as an indicator that lets you know when the appliance has any trouble that requires the attention of a technician.
Ease of Cleaning
The jars are a bit deep. But even so, it is fairly easy to reach the bottom. Also, the blades are not that sharp to touch. So, you can clean easily without worrying about hurting yourself.
We tried cleaning the jar after grinding turmeric and we were able to remove the stains almost completely by rinsing and scrubbing moderately with a dish wash liquid.
Flaws, But Not Deal Breakers
The Hamilton Beach Professional Juicer Mixer Grinder is without doubt a super powerful appliance. It is quite efficient, hands-free, safe and aesthetically pleasing. The pre-set menu makes it unique compared to any other mixer grinder available in the Indian market today.
But, it is a pretty expensive appliance. It costs about 2-3 times that of a 750 to 1000 Watt mixer grinder from other reputed brands. At this price, you do expect to get a food processor attachment. Also, though it is called a Juicer Mixer Grinder, you don’t get any juicer attachment or strainer along.
Yet another point is that, when you run it in the top speed, it is a bit noisy owing to the highly powerful motor. This could have been taken care of had they used their Sound Shield Technology found in a few blenders sold in US.
The Hamilton Beach Professional Indian Juicer Mixer Grinder is truly a unique appliance available in the market today. It is quite user-friendly and definitely helpful for a busy home maker. Given its powerful motor and hands-free operations, even a small scale commercial establishment could very well use it. (Not recommended by manufacturer though). Had it been a bit more conservatively priced, it would have definitely been a must-have appliance for every kitchen.
