Best Wet Grinder in India: Buyer Guide & Reviews
When I set out to work on this review of best wet grinders, the first thought that crossed my mind was why do you need a wet grinder? I have been grinding idili and dosa batter using my Sujata mixer grinder since the past many years. Though the taste varies at times (which homemade food doesn’t?) overall, the results have been satisfactory all these years. So why?
I thought of asking one of my friends who use a wet grinder. She was of the opinion that the idili made using the batter ground from a wet grinder is softer and tastier than that from mixer grinder. Not only that, the taste is almost always consistent and the batter could be stored for up to 4-5 days in the fridge without becoming sour.
This set me thinking and so, I started reading about the benefits of wet grinder and am quite convinced. First of all, you would have noticed that the batter gets hot when you grind it from a mixer grinder. Heat is not a conducive environment for the good bacteria that helps in the fermentation process. When you use a wet grinder, hardly any heat is generated, thus giving you tastier Idili.
Next, aeration plays a very important role in giving you fluffy idili. The wide mouth wet grinder bowl and slow grinding helps improve the aeration, which again leads to tastier idili.
Finally, grinding rice and urad dal in mixer grinder takes a toll on its blade. Even if you have the best mixer grinder, it starts losing sharpness slowly. The masala mixture that once used to get grounded in just a minute will start taking a lot more time as you keep grinding idili batter in the same jar. The wet grinder on the other hand has grinding stones which don’t lose sharpness even after years.
Oh, and last, but not the least. Wet grinders save you a lot of time as you can make around 1-2 Litre of batter at a go. A huge advantage when you have more than 4 family members at your home. Moreover, when you grind in a mixie, you always have to keep an eye or a hand over the jar else the lid might open and splatter all over the kitchen. With a wet grinder, you don’t have to worry about it. You just need to add the soaked rice, urad dal and sufficient water and let the wet grinder do its job.
Now, comes the final test of taste. We used the same soaked rice and dal and made a batch of idili from batter made using wet grinder and another from mixer grinder. Well, to be honest, the difference in taste was noticeable.
Overall, considering that a wet grinder has a life of at least 7-10 years, it definitely is a worthy investment that will save time and give you tastier dosas and idilis forever.
Now that you know about the benefits of wet grinders, let us help you choose the one that is best suitable for you.

The unit consists of a large drum with two conical grinding stones and a batter cleaning attachment. The body is made of ABS plastic and the 85 Watt motor is used in it.
The highlight of this wet grinder is the conical grinding stone, which helps in better grinding and aeration without generating much heat. The 1.25 Litre drum is made of high grade stainless steel thus preventing rust formation even for years. Along with it, you can get attachments like coconut scraper and Atta kneader at extra cost.
The size of 1.25 L is suitable for 3-4-member family. Large joint families can opt for Elgi UltraGrind+ Gold Wet Grinder or if you would like to have a timer with buzzer along with the grinder, then you can opt for Elgi Ultra Perfect+ 2-Litre Wet Grinder.

Note- If you plan to take the wet grinder abroad to US or Canada, you will have to opt for 110 Volt version which is sold separately.
If space is a constraint in your kitchen, then Premier Wonder Table top wet grinder would be an ideal choice for you. Unlike traditional wet grinders, this model has a cylindrical shape with motor underneath the drum, thus saving space and improving portability.
The unit is pretty efficient too. It has 95W motor and two grinding stones which helps grind the batter for 3-4 members in just about 20 minutes.
Other variants of Premier Wonder wet grinders available are-
Premier Tilting grinder which makes it easier to pour batter in to a separate container.
Premier Wonder Table Top Wet Grinder 110 Volt for use in US and Canada.
If you want to buy atta kneader and coconut scraper along with the wet grinder as a single combo, then that is also available.
Perhaps the first thing you might notice about the Panasonic MK-SW200BLK wet grinder is its design and accessories that enhance its user-friendliness. The wet grinder comes with a timer that can be set for up to 45 minutes. Once the time is up, the grinder switches off on its own—so once you get a hang of using it, you don’t have to supervise it constantly.
The transparent lid of the 2 Litre drum of Panasonic MK-SW200BLK comes with an opening. So, you can look at the batter and add water or rice or dal through the opening without having to open the lid. In fact, the grinder switches itself off when you open the lid, thus enhancing the product’s safety.
On the downside, the spatula is not long enough that it touches the drum’s bottom when inserted through the lid opening. Next, attachments for dough kneading and coconut scraping are not sold by Panasonic.
Overall, safety is given due importance in Panasonic MK-SW200BLK. Timer gives an added convenience and grinding efficiency is at par with Eligi and Premier Wonder wet grinders.
Bajaj WX 3 is a basic budget friendly wet grinder with a powerful 150-watt motor. The grinding stones are quite durable and it has a spatula like attachment that helps mix the batter thoroughly.
The drum is made of stainless steel and induction motor is used. To protect the motor and enhance its life, the appliance is fitted with a motor overload protector. Additional accessories for kneading atta and scraping coconut are also available with the unit.
A downside to Bajaj WX 3 is that it is a tad heavier than other wet grinders in the list, weighing about 16 Kg.
Singer Maxigrind looks pretty much like Bajaj WX 3. Even price wise they are quite comparable. But what gives Singer Maxigrind an edge is that atta kneader and coconut scraper attachments are sold along with the wet grinder making it an absolute deal for the money.
Other than this, almost all features are at par. So, you would already know which one to choose!
