Samsung RT34T4513S8/HL is one of the best selling convertible refrigerators in India. It comes with 324 litre gross capacity. The net capacity of the fridge is 228 litre and that of the freezer is 72 litres.

The 5 different modes of the refrigerator are Normal, Seasonal where Freezer is on standby mode, Vacation mode where the fridge is on standby, Extra Fridge where the freezer is converted to fridge; and finally, Home Alone where fridge is off and freezer works as a fridge. The front panel also has buttons for Power Freeze and Power Cool whereby the temperature is reduced quickly by up to 31%. After an hour, this mode is switched off and the fridge/freezer runs as normal.

As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest positives of this model is the Twin Cooling Plus technology. This means the air flow to the fridge and freezer is separate. So the dry and colder air from the freezer doesn’t enter the fridge. Thus, the fridge has up to 70% more humidity and so fruits and vegetables stay fresher for longer.

Yet another advantage is that the refrigerator uses a Digital Inverter Compressor which runs at varying speed depending on food load and ambient conditions. This reduces energy consumption, noise and minimizes temperature variation inside the cabin. Owing to this, the annual energy consumption is just 164 units, thus garnering a 3 star energy rating.

The interiors are also well organized. The freezer has a movable ice tray. The top shelf of the fridge is a Fresh room which is an enclosed space for keeping dairy and deli products which are temperature sensitive. There are 3 more shelves and a large vegetable box. There are also 3 door shelves. In order to fit a modular kitchen, there are no shelves at the bottom of the door. Had there been a shelf at the bottom, the door would have to be opened more than 90 degrees in order to completely take out the vegetable box.

Overall, with excellent cooling efficiency and optimal energy consumption, it is one of the best options for a medium-sized family. A larger family could opt for their 415-litre variant- Samsung RT42M553ES8/TL.

LG 360 L 3 Star Inverter Linear Frost-Free Double Door Refrigerator (GL-T402JDS3)

Best Refrigerator Under Rs. 40000

LG refrigerators are among the best-sellers in India. Though their convertible refrigerators aren’t as versatile as Samsung 5-in-1 convertible refrigerators, its functions are sufficient for most Indian families.

The GL-T402JDS3 comes with 360-litre capacity. The freezer has 87-litre capacity and the fridge has a 273-litre capacity. The freezer can be converted to fridge to increase the storage space. Owing to the Door Cooling+ technology, it cools up to 35% faster than a conventional refrigerator. The annual energy consumption is just 215 units.

One of the main advantages of this higher-end model is that it uses an Inverter Linear Compressor. Unlike conventional compressors, it has lesser points of friction and hence makes lesser noise, has better energy optimization and lesser temperature variance inside. It also has better durability.

The most important features that affect the freshness of the produces are constant temperature and optimal level of humidity. The Inverter Linear Compressor ensures the first part and Moist N Balance crisper ensures that the vegetables are at the right humidity.

Talking about the interiors, it is designed in a user-friendly manner. The top shelf can be pulled out. Underneath, there are 4 tempered glass shelves. Then comes the temperature adjustable convertible box. You can keep fresh fruits/vegetables etc by adjusting the lever to the left side or store non-vegetarian items by moving the lever to the right side. The vegetable crisper underneath comes with a lattice-shaped lid that helps preserve moisture. It also has a vent that can be opened or closed to let out or preserve the moisture.

A drawback of this model is that the control panel is at the back which can be a bit difficult to reach.

Overall, it is yet another excellent option available for a fairly large family. If you need a still larger refrigerator, LG GL-I472QPZX with 420 litres is yet another choice you could opt for.

Whirlpool 355 L 3 Star Frost Free Double Door Refrigerator (IF PRO BM INV 370 ELT+

Best Refrigerators Under 40000 in India

The Whirlpool IF PRO MV INV 370 ELT+ is a bottom-mounted refrigerator that has 355 litre capacity.

It is apt for a medium sized family that needs better access to the fridge and doesn’t use the freezer frequently. The freezer- fridge ratio is 70:30 with freezer having 88 litre capacity and fridge having 267 litre capacity.

Just like other refrigerators in the segment, it uses an inverter compressor. Whirlpool calls it Intellisense Inverter Technology. Essentially, the functions are the same. Various sensors detect the ambient conditions and food load to signal the compressor to change the speed accordingly and thus maintain a uniform temperature inside.

Whirlpool seems to have taken inspiration from some of the LG features and have incorporated 3D cooling and a Variable Temperature zone in this model. 3D cooling means there are multiple vents from top to the bottom of the back panel that helps maintain a uniform temperature inside. Variable Temperature zone is just like LG’s convertible box where temperature can be adjusted using a slider to set it to any mode between dairy or fruits and vegetables.

To preserve the vegetables for longer, Whirlpool has Microblok technology inside the crisper which reduces bacterial growth by up to 99%. Zeolite also helps absorb the ethylene gas to slow down the ripening of the fruits/vegetables.

Talking about the interiors, there are 4 tempered glass shelves, a temperature variance zone and a vegetable crisper in the fridge. On the doors, there are 4 side shelves too. The freezer is very compact and may not be suitable for a large non-vegetarian family who stock fish or meat in bulk. But an advantage is that the ice tray is not just movable, but is entirely portable too.

Overall, with fast cooling, excellent design and performance, it is definitely a great choice within Rs. 40000.

Panasonic has taken this technology further by incorporating AI. The refrigerator stores the usage pattern for 3 weeks and foresees the future pattern to optimize the compressor speed and hence the overall performance.

The interiors are well designed. There is no door shelf at the level of the vegetable crisper. So, you can pull out the vegetable box by opening the door at just 90 degrees.

The temperature of the freezer, fridge and vegetable crisper is set at different levels for optimal performance. While the freezer maintains -19 degree Celsius, the shelves in the fridge where cooked food is stored are maintained at 3 degree Celsius and vegetable crisper at 4 degree Celsius. The crisper with 35-litre capacity also has a slider to control the humidity level. And the fridge has a Silver Air Filter to eliminate the growth of mold and bacteria inside it.
