Xiaomi Poco F1

best mobile phone under 20000

Find latest price (Amazon)

PROS:
  • Excellent value for money
  • Best in class processor with fast and reliable performance
  • Superior battery life and fast charging.

CONS:
  • Plastic body lacks finesse
  • Camera is just above average.

The Poco F1 was launched in August 2018, and even after more than a year of its launch, it still ranks highly amongst its competitors. Thanks to the powerful Snapdragon 845 SoC with vapor cooling and 6 GB RAM, this beast is a hot favorite among the youth for its gaming capabilities.

Performance

Snapdragon 845 is considered as one of the best processors for Android and Poco F11 is the cheapest phone using this processor by a huge margin. Also, the liquid cooling technology which is usually found in higher end Samsung phones keeps Poco F11 away from heating issues even when you use it for gaming for long duration. The fast and efficient processor also makes multitasking easy without any glitch.
Undoubtedly, the fastest phone in this segment, Poco F1 supports fingerprint scanner, pin unlocking and face unlock. While the former two are pretty quick, face unlock sometimes is a bit off.

Camera

The phone has a dual back camera with 12 MP and 5 MP sensors, and a 20-megapixel front camera. The front camera uses pixel binning to deliver crisp and clear photos with minimal noise.
Compared to the high end mobile phones, the picture quality may not be that wow worthy. But given the price, it is definitely good. Photos taken during the day time are quite good, even when it is cloudy. It is sharp, clear and noise is minimal with fairly good color accuracy. But during the night, color accuracy is a bit affected. It is the same with selfies– the ones taken during the day time are decent, but at night, without portrait mode, the photos get noisy and details are lost. Also, as the phone doesn’t have optical image stabilizer (OIS), the photos get blurry if you don’t have steady hands.

Display

Coming to the screen size, it features a 6.18 inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9.
In terms of display performance, the Poco F1 pumps out 461 nits of maximum brightness, which is excellent. The Gorilla glass 3 protection protects the display from unintentional scratches. Even when you check out the phone outdoors at noon, visibility wasn’t a problem. The IPS panel has a decent color production but is still some way off when compared to an AMOLED display.

Battery

The Poco F11 comes with a 4000 mAh battery and supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3 technology. It takes about 2 hours to completely charge the battery from 0 to 100%. With screen on time of 7-8 hours while connected to Wi-fi with mobile data and location service on, the phone lasted for 2 days.
The overall battery life is excellent, with a full charge lasting for more than a day even after heavy gaming and video streaming.

Design

While the Poco F1 is outstanding in every aspect, it lacks the finesse in its design. With a body entirely made up of plastic, it doesn’t inspire a premium feel which can be an important factor when you can buy phones made up of glass or metal in the same price range.

Two variants of Oppo F1 is available. One with 6 GB RAM+ 128 GB storage (price) and the other one with 8 GB RAM+256 GB storage ( price).

Redmi Note 8 Pro

Find latest price (Amazon)

PROS:
  • Excellent battery life
  • Efficient processor making it apt for gaming and multitasking.
  • Fairly good camera
  • Premium Finish

CONS:
  • The close-up photos are a but uninspiring

The Redmi Note 8 Pro was recently launched in August 2019 as the successor of the Redmi Note 7 Pro, which was one of the high selling mobiles by the company.

Performance

The Redmi Note 8 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio G90T processor. As it has 8 GB RAM, you can load multiple apps, indulge in gaming and watch videos without any lag or stuttering. In fact, you don’t find any need to kill apps running in the background.

Even while playing PUBG and other games with heavy graphics, the performance is pretty lag-free. While playing at high frame rate setting for about 30-40 minutes, the phone turned a bit warm. But when turned to ultra frame rate, the phone started getting hot. Even so, there was no lag or drag.

The liquid cooling chamber of the Redmi Note 8 is larger than that of Poco F1 and it is comparatively better at keeping the phone cool for longer period.

Like most of the devices by Redmi, the phone has face unlock and in-display fingerprint scanner. The unlocking is pretty quick and hassle free in all modes.
It is also equipped with a microSD card slot, which supports cards up to 512GB.

Camera

The Redmi Note 8 Pro features a 64 MP, 8 MP, 2 MP, and 2 MP quad-camera setup at the back. At the front, it has a 20MP camera for selfies. Overall, though the hardware has been improved, the image quality is comparable to the Note 7 Pro.

The camera app has a button for primary lens and wide angled one. The photos shot in day time are sharp and crisp. The automatic HDR setting helps get the right exposure too. But when shot in wide-angle, there was a lack of clarity and some distortion. At night when light is low, you have to enable night mode to get usable photos. When enabled, the clarity and sharpness is quite good. Close-ups and macro could however have been a bit better with higher clarity and separation.

Talking about the 20 MP selfie camera, the quality is pretty neat. The contrast is enhanced and the face is cussed well with background blurred to pop out the object of focus.
Overall, you are likely to be impressed with the picture and video quality of Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Display

Display-wise, the phone has a 6.53-inch display which runs on a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The screen size is an upgrade over its predecessor, and currently the biggest in all the Redmi phones.
The viewing angles and brightness levels of the phone provide a great multimedia viewing experience. If you are standing in bright sunlight, you can adjust the brightness levels to your convenience.

Battery

The phone is equipped with a 4500 mAh battery with proprietary fast charging. Even though the battery is an improvement over its predecessor, it still provides a similar battery life mainly due to the more power-hungry processor. Still, if you watch 30 minutes of YouTube videos, you will notice a drop of 6% battery power, which is fairly good, while 15 minutes of heavy graphic gaming also drops battery by 6%.

Design

The phone bears a glass body with a number of different color options to choose from, which are both elegant and trendy. Gorilla Glass 5 is used in front and back for ample protection. Overall, it feels quite premium and durable.

Nokia 8.1

best mobile phone under 20000

Find latest price (Amazon)

PROS:
  • Good build quality
  • Excellent processor with lag free performance.
  • Bright, sharp display

CONS:
  • Image processing could have been better.
  • Battery life with 2 sims is uninspiring

Nokia was once the market leader in the mobile industry but since its sleep decline and an unsuccessful stint under Microsoft, the company is making slow strides towards establishing itself once again.

Performance

The company’s latest offering the 8.1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor with 4 GB RAM. The Snapdragon 710 is almost at par with the Snapdragon 845 processor, which means the phone is great in terms of performance. Seeing that it has just 4 GB RAM, you might expect it to not be as efficient as the former two entries, but that is not the case. Even though the RAM is lesser, the performance is pretty fluid with no lag. Thanks to Adreno 616 GPU, gaming is extremely fast without any stuttering or lag. When you play for about 30 minutes or so, the back gets a bit warm. But with regular usage, you don’t find any heating issues.
The pure Android experience is yet another aspect that you will love. It has no unwanted apps or ads that you typically see in a Xiaomi phone.
Nokia 8.1 features a rear fingerprint scanner and face-unlock feature. Both are found to work glitch free. But the Android 10 update has removed the face unlock feature due to security issues.

Camera

The Nokia 8.1 is equipped with a 12 MP rear camera with a 13 MP fixed-focus depth sensor. For selfies, it has a 20 MP front camera. Both the cameras are decent. But in the Bokeh mode, you do find that pictures of people were a bit off with dark skin and lack of detailing.
That being said, it is one of the few phones in the segment with Optical Image Stabilization. So, videos you take on the move doesn’t shake and the images remain sharp. The selfie camera is pretty good, but it artificially sharpens the face a bit.

Display

It has a 6.18-inch corner to corner display with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9, running at a resolution of 1080 x 2246. It is a compact compared to most of the other phones in the segment.
It also features an HDR10-capable screen, which is surely decent enough in contrast with the dimensions of the phone. The display is pretty sharp, clear and bright even in wide angles. The color reproduction is also pretty good and fare better compared to Poco F1.

Battery

Coming to the battery performance, it is equipped with a 3500 mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging. The battery backup is not at par with what other phones in this segment offer. With moderate usage of 6 to 8 hours, you will notice the phone running out of power. Also, when you put 2 sims, the battery life gets affected badly.

Design

Design-wise, the Nokia 8.1 is made up of an aluminum frame with a glass on the front and the back. The glasses have 2.5 D Gorilla glass protection and the back glass particularly is fairly smudge free. Though a bit bulky, it feels pretty solid.
Apart from its good looks, it is a sturdy phone as you can feel every part made up of solid metal. Nokia has definitely upped itself in terms of design.

Oppo F11 Pro

Find latest price (Amazon)

PROS:
  • Excellent pictures from front and back facing camera.
  • Above average battery life.
  • Lag free for regular operations.

CONS:
  • Gaming performance could have been better.

The OPPO F11 Pro is the latest mid-segment phone which features a pop-up selfie camera. Like most of the releases by OPPO, the F11 Pro also comes with gradient finishing, face-unlock and a rear fingerprint scanner.

Performance

The F11 Pro is powered by an Helio P70 processor and 6GB RAM. For gaming lovers, the device delivers fairly solid performance. The screen is quite fluid while scrolling and launching various apps.
OPPO’s gaming optimization automatically adjusts the game settings to adjust with the phone’s hardware to deliver a seamless gaming experience to the users. While playing graphic heavy games, the frame rate is automatically set to medium and the display is quite lag free. But if you crank up the frame rate, you will find that there is lag and stutter.
The mobile phone has both fingerprint and face recognition locking. The selfie camera pops up every time you activate it. But it works pretty quick and isn’t cumbersome as one would expect. The fingerprint unlock is also quite fast.
The loudspeaker is pretty loud enough for gaming and videos.

Camera

While the biggest USP of this phone is its 16 MP pop-up selfie camera, which allows you to shoot portraits in any kind of light. The pop-up feature also frees up some space at the top of the display, which gives the phone a unique look.
The F11 Pro is equipped with a 48 MP primary camera and a 5 MP secondary camera at the back. Even though the phone only has a dual-camera setup at the back, it takes photos with incredible detail and accurate colors. The pictures are taken at 12MP resolution by default. But if you manually change it to 48 MP, you will notice that options like HDR, Chroma Boost, AI Scene Recognition, continuous shooting etc. were missing. The picture quality in both 12 MP and 48 MP resolution were quite sharp.
Even at night, the night mode worked pretty effectively and the photos produced were quite sharp and not at all grainy. Similarly selfies too were quite detailed, sharp and without any noise.
Overall, camera definitely can be noted as one of the USPs of this phone.

Battery

The phone is packed with a 4000 mAh battery, which supports OPPO’s VOOC fast charging. The battery backup is excellent. Even with moderate to heavy gaming and video streaming for 8 to 10 hours, you get about 40% battery power still remaining.

Display

Coming to the display, the screen measures 6.5 inches with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It has an aspect ratio of 19:9. The display quality is excellent, even at wide viewing angles, and on par with some of the best phones available in this range.

Design

Perhaps the first thing you note about this phone is the pop-up camera. It is motorized and hopefully should be durable in the long run. The frame seems to be made of plastic, yet it has a premium finish. The gradient back panel is also quite attractive. Thankfully, the screen has a screen protector and Oppo ships a protective casing which is designed considering the pop-up camera.

The mobile phone is available in two variants with 64 GB and 128 GB storage option.

Vivo V15

best mobile phone under 20000

Find latest price (Amazon)

PROS:

Impressive battery life Excellent camera

CONS:

Cannot stream HD videos from Prime and Netflix Doesn’t have face recognition scanner

The Vivo V15 is a scaled-down version of the high-end phone – V15 Pro. The company is trying to build its presence in the mid-range segment by providing high-end features with a competitive price point.

Performance

The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio P70, with 6GB RAM. It is pretty good for regular day to day functions like checking out social media apps, taking photos and playing games which are not graphics intensive. But when it comes to heavy graphic games like PUBG or Asphalt 9: Legends, the frame rate is automatically set to medium and there is no lag. However, if you set it to high, you do find stuttering and lag. The mobile also has a few gaming centric features like Game Assistant which helps you block notifications while playing; the Esports Mode, in addition to blocking notifications, disables touch gestures that can accidentally open notifications shade; the “Smart temperature rising strategy” ensures that performance is not affected even if the mobile gets excessively heated up playing for long duration. Overall, though there are a few features made for gaming, that the processor lacks in high frame setting is a let down.
The fingerprint scanner is pretty quick and unlocks the screen swiftly. Unlike the pro version, the Vivo V15 lacks the face unlock feature and only has a rear fingerprint scanner.
The mobile phone also has a smart button which can be customized as per your wish to invoke app of your choice.
The phone lacks a Widevine L1 certification, which prevents you from streaming HD videos from Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Camera

The V15 features a pop-up selfie camera and gradient finishing, which puts it in comparison with the OPPO F11 Pro. At the back, the phone has a triple camera setup (12MP + 5MP + 5MP), which takes photographs with incredible details.
At the front, you get the 32 MP pop-up camera, which shoots crisp photos without any grains in low-light conditions. The selfie camera pops up and down quickly. You also have the option to use a number of filters and other customization provided within the stock camera app.

Battery

The Vivo V15 is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery with dual engine fast charging support. The battery drain is quite steady, with the phone lasting through an entire day even after heavy gaming and multimedia usage. But that it has a micro-USB type charging port instead of type C makes it look a bit outdated.

Display

It has a 6.53-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 which is slightly larger than the V15 Pro. The screen has Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The color output is really outstanding, which makes it a charm for watching videos or to play PUB-G with your friends. However, if you are standing under bright sunlight, you would wish the phone to have been a little brighter. The viewing angle is just decent.

Design

The rear panel made of polycarbonate is gradient and looks premium, but can be a bit smudgy at times. The camera section protrudes a bit and is not that pleasing to the eyes. The notch is almost non-existent, but the chin extends a bit to the screen and reduces the appeal a bit.

The Huawei P30 Lite is a feature-packed phone launched in March 2019. The phone is a mid-segment entry by the company that has been struggling to make an impact in the smartphone market.
Design-wise, it looks like a premium smartphone with 3D curved glass at the rear and elegant color-gradient finishing. It features a rear fingerprint scanner and a front camera-based face unlock feature.
The P30 Lite is powered by a Hisilicon Kirin 710 Octa-core processor and 6GB RAM. For gamers, it can easily run PUB-G on medium settings with a smooth frame-rate. However, if you want to play the game on high settings, you may experience some lag and drop in FPS.
In terms of display, it comes with a 6.15-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2312, with an aspect ratio of 19.25:9. The display is vivid and delivers a decent reproduction of colors. But it has a weaker contrast, which results in darker shades looking a bit dull.
