10 Best Geysers in India
Most of the appliances in my parent’s home have to be treated with a lot of respect because they are older than or at least as old as me. Our geyser is no exception—the bulky 15 Litre geyser from Crompton Greaves was bought in the early 90s ( so, my younger sibling so to speak). In its lifespan of close to 30 years, it would have undergone repair just 2-3 times. While one reason for its long lifespan is the good build quality, the other reason is that it is taken good care of by my parents. They switch it on only for as long as needed and ensures that it is not unnecessarily heated up. Fortunately, as they live in a place with good water quality, there is no deposit build-up inside the storage tank which can hamper the geyser’s performance.
On the other hand, the 6-year-old AO Smith geyser in my home at Bangalore has been pretty good in terms of performance so far. But when of late, our electricity bill shot up to almost double, we serviced our geyser and were astonished to find almost 4 kg salt deposit inside the storage tank. Yeah, it was never serviced in its 6 years’ life!
From our experience, we have only high regard for Crompton Greaves and AO Smith geysers. The quality, performance and durability are pretty good. The after-sales service has also been pretty satisfactory so far.
So, as a part of writing this article, we checked with a few of our friends and fellow-reviewers and compiled this list of best geysers in India. The main factors that we have taken into consideration while forming this list are—performance, durability, energy efficiency and after-sales service.

How To Choose A Geyser?
Before we get on to the list, we would like to tell you a bit about what to look for in your geyser based on your needs. Some of the key factors to consider when buying a geyser include:
Types of geysers
There are two main types of geysers:
Storage geysers: These are the ones you will find in most Indian homes. Storage geysers, as the name suggests, come with an insulated storage tank. Water is heated and stored within the storage tank and then carried to the taps through attached pipes.
The tank can store several litres of water, depending on its capacity, making it a great choice for families where a lot of hot water is consumed for different purposes such as bathing, washing clothes etc.
Typically, they have storage capacity ranging from 5 to 50 litres.
Instant geysers: Unlike a storage geyser, instant geysers do not store any water. It just heats the water instantly on demand by passing the water through the heating element.
While these geysers are more energy-efficient compared to the storage types, they provide only a limited water flow. So, they don’t work too well for larger households, but rather for households with one or two people that require only one bucket of hot water at a time, or for kitchen.
Electric geysers are the most common types, but there is an option of gas and solar geysers as well. Electric geysers make the perfect choice for households that need large storage type geysers.
Gas geysers are typically instant geysers. They use less energy and can help save on your monthly bills. However, it works best for the kitchen, because that is where you can safely and conveniently place a gas cylinder. You can keep a cylinder inside a bathroom only if there is sufficient space and ventilation, otherwise, there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Solar geysers can prove to be a viable and environment-friendly option if you have a larger household with high consumption. Remember, it would require huge investment and it may not work too well in winters and monsoons.
The capacity of a geyser refers to the amount of water it can provide at a given time. While in case of a storage tank geyser, it simply refers to the storage space in the tank, in case of an instant geyser, it indicates the number of litres of hot water that the geyser produces a minute. So, a 10-litres storage geyser would heat up and store 10 litres of water at a time, and a 1-litre instant geyser would produce 1 litre of hot water a minute.
When buying a geyser, choose the capacity very carefully because that will determine how useful the geyser is. It should not happen that the next family member has to wait for 15 minutes to take a bath after you have used up the hot water. The right size geyser would produce an adequate amount of hot water for immediate use.
Ideally, for a family of 2-3 members, a 3-litre instant geyser or a 10-15 litre storage geyser should work well.
For a family of 4-6, 25 litres should be a good capacity for a storage type geyser, and 6 litres for an instant geyser.
However, for a shower, you will need a storage geyser with higher capacity. For use in a kitchen, an instant geyser with 2-3 litre capacity is a good choice.

Apart from capacity, you will also need to take into account the usage of the geyser. For example, how many people use hot water during peak hours? If everyone has to take a bath within a short time frame, and clothes also have to be washed at the same time, you will need a geyser with a higher capacity.
Wattage and power consumption
Most geysers work at 1500-2000 watts power, but there are some models that work at 2500-3000 watts. These geysers have much higher heating rates but they also use up a lot of electricity within a short time period. So, you need to make a trade-off here. If you want a higher flow rate, you should be ready to pay higher electricity bills.
On average, heating costs account for over 20 per cent of electricity expenses in most homes. Therefore, it is important to choose a geyser that delivers the best output as per your needs and is not an energy guzzler.
