If you live in a place with less humidity and if the summer is not that scorching, or if you are looking for a personalized cooling solution like while staying in a PG, then an air cooler would be a better solution. Desert Air Coolers are for larger spaces like say, if you need to cool your living room or say a conference hall in your office. They have higher water capacity and hence higher cooling capacity too.
Personalized Air Coolers, as the name suggests, are suitable for small spaces like we said for using in a PG or hostel. They are more portable than Dessert Air Coolers.

Best Air Coolers In India
Available with water capacity ranging from 55, 75 to 88 Litres, this desert air cooler from Crompton is apt for spaces with more than 500 Sq. Ft. space. The manufacturers claim the unit has a cool air delivery rate of 4600 m3/hr and air throw up to 52 Ft. Consuming just 200 watt electricity, it is fairly energy efficient too.
The air speed can be set to three levels and the motorized louver moves in all 4 directions. Overall, the unit is pretty effective. If you plan to use it for 10 to 12 hours a day, you would be better off with the 75 litre model.
The Crompton Ozone air cooler is fairly compact. As it has 4 castor wheels, you can move it around without much effort too. It uses honeycomb cooling pads which is superior to the wood wool cooling pad.
Water can be filled into the chamber using a pipe through the valve at the back or from the front side using a bucket and mug. Additionally, if you want to further cool the air, there is an ice chamber at the top. The unit has a water level indicator too.
As there is a drainage valve at the bottom, you can drain off the remaining water without much difficulty. Be sure to change the water often as stagnant water could be a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria and thus affect your health adversely.
The unit seems to be fairly durable with high quality ABS plastic that is rust free. However, there are a few complaints about cracks in the body. So, inspect thoroughly at the time of delivery.
Another point to note is that the honeycomb pad tends to have an unpleasant smell in the beginning. It gets better within a few days. Alternatively, you could remove it and leave it to air dry before you start using.
A few complain that the power cord is short. But then, longer cords are avoided for safety reasons to prevent people from tripping and the air cooler falling.
Overall, there are a few flaws. But given its awesome cooling capability and fairly good efficiency, this could be one of the best options to choose from for a fairly large room.
Voltas Desert Cooler is yet another option worth considering. It doesn’t have as many features as the former Crompton, but still is worth considering as it is priced better.
The unit looks pretty elegant and it has a trolley that makes it quite portable.
With air flow rate of 4000 m3/hr and air throw of 13.7 meter, it can be used for rooms as large as 440 Sq.Ft. Owing to 70 litre capacity, it can be used for 10 to 12 hours at a stretch.
Just like the previous option from Crompton, it too has a honeycomb cooling pad and water level indicator. However, it doesn’t have an ice chamber and the air flows only in two directions.
Overall, if you are looking for an air cooler for a living room or a small office room with just about basic features, you would be happy with this option.
Symphony Siesta is yet another budget friendly air cooler worth considering. It is rated fairly high among the users too.
The unit has 70 litre capacity and a powerful 16 inch fan that makes it apt for spaces up to 370 Sq. Ft. As with all other air coolers, it too uses a honeycomb cooling pad. Just like the previous option from Voltas, it has just a uni-directional vertical swing. And the air throw is about the body level for better comfort.
Overall, the reviews about performance and durability are pretty positive, making it quite a great choice for a medium sized room.
Orient Electric Magic Cool CW5002B is comparatively compact than the former entries. But that doesn’t make it really portable because it doesn’t have wheels.
However, it has some pretty cool features that makes it quite a delightful choice.
First of all, the air flows in all 4 directions with the motorized louvre movement. It has a mosquito as well as dust protection filter which enhances the air quality. In addition to the 50 litre water tank, there is a fragrance chamber which eliminates any unpleasant smell.
The air throw is about 10.7 meter and air delivery rate is 2000 m3/hr. That makes it more of a personal air cooler than the desert coolers that we have seen so far.
Consuming about 220 watt, the unit is fairly energy efficient. Additionally, you can connect it to your home/office inverter too.
Overall, it is definitely a good choice as a personal air cooler.
Kenstar is a bit similar to the previous Orient Electric. It too has a 50 litre water tank which can be filled from the top, front or side inlets. The air throw distance is about 10.6 meter and air delivery rate is a bit low at 1750 m3/hr.
The main point of difference we notice is that the cooling media is wood wool pads instead of honeycomb pads.
As with the previous option, the air flows in all 4 directions and can be set to 3 speed levels.
The unit is apt as a personal air cooler for a small space of 200 Sq. Ft. Being a product from Kenstar, you can be assured of fairly good durability and better service too.
The Bajaj Platina PX97 is one of the best selling personal coolers in India.
The unit is pretty compact and highly portable. It has a water tank with 36 litre capacity which you can fill in from the back valve. The castor wheels are pretty strong too.
As it has 4 way air deflection and 3 way speed control, you can be assured of comfort at all times. But the louvre has to be moved manually.
The honeycomb cooling media is quite efficient. It is definitely the best to use this air cooler in dry areas. But if you live in a comparatively humid place, you could switch off the pump after a while to maintain the humidity while still making the air cool.
Overall, the unit is pretty cost effective for personal use. A drawback however is that its body could have been a tad stronger. The plastic seems a bit delicate. Also draining water from the tank isn’t that easy.
That being said, if you are looking for a cost effective, power efficient personal cooler, the Bajaj Platini PX97 could very well be the one for you.
